Jim Moir (Vic Reeves)
The Lord of the Radiant Garden
“Art by celebrities is often risible. But there is nothing unintentionally funny about the technically excellent paintings of Jim Moir, AKA Vic Reeves… Beyond the skill, it is the love of nature that glows.”
Jonathan Jones, The Guardian May 2022
We are delighted to welcome the artist Jim Moir, otherwise known as the comedian, actor and author Vic Reeves to Cornwall Contemporary, for his first ever solo exhibition of paintings in Cornwall.
Widely celebrated for his irreverent wit, glorious eccentricity and tremendous creativity, Jim attended the Sir John Cass Art School in London at the age of 22 before becoming a household name in British comedy for television work including Vic Reeves Big Night Out, Shooting Stars, Vic Reeves Turner Prize Moments, The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, Coronation Street and House of Fools.
Art has always remained his first love and his original, eccentric and often mischievous artwork has been exhibited at institutions including the Royal Academy in London.
The anarchy and wonderful nonconformity for which he is synonymous, is evident in his bold, vibrant and often surreal artworks which merge his interest in the natural world, pop culture and celebrity with his constantly creative imagination.
The visual and wider arts scene continues to flourish here in Cornwall and Jim Moir’s unique creativity is most welcome.
From the Newlyn School of painters to the St Ives Modernists to the present day painters, sculptors, writers, musicians and actors who now all call Cornwall home; this area has always been a haven for creativity and culture and a place to seek inspiration.
I know that this exhibition of Moir’s artworks which reflect his humour and refreshing surreal view of the world, will have an exuberant audience here in the far south west.
