‘Voyages’ is a solo exhibition of abstract expressionist paintings by David Mankin – one of the most exciting contemporary painters working in Cornwall today –

“For David Mankin, each painting is a voyage. He goes on a journey of discovery with every canvas, pushing boundaries, exploring possibilities and finding himself in uncharted territories. Since his residency in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland last November, Mankin has urged himself to be bolder, to say as much with a simpler composition. In Voyages, we see striking marks, large planes of paint and vast shapes. He has pushed himself with his materials, using a starker contrast of thick and thin paint, more expressive passages of charcoal, a greater range of brush sizes and more deliberate use of his hands. ‘The voyage for me, is finding that mark that’s going to get my heart beating a bit faster, that’s why I go to the studio every day, to find those moments of magic.’ The imaginary deep is what he has achieved in this exhibition; a bolder composition generates a force which draws us in… Mankin communicates the feeling we have on the precipice, the meeting point between land and sea. Looking outward towards the unknown encourages reflection: ruminating on the past, considering the choices which lie ahead. He has a unique way of distilling his fierce and complex connection to the landscape, learning from each canvas, relishing the accidents and constantly searching for new ways of translating his experience…”

“When standing in front of a David Mankin painting, we do not only feel the sea spray on our faces, the warmth of the sun, the drama of high winds, we feel it speaks to us directly, excavating our own weathered, private, devotion to land and sea.”
Kate Reeve-Edwards
