Alasdair Lindsay | Pools | a solo exhibition of paintings accompanied by Sharon Griffin sculptures at Cornwall Contemporary
“For this collection of paintings I have been studying sea pools, lidos and swimming pools. A subject I have been interested in for some time, but this is my first dedicated show.
Each sea pool has a very proud and dedicated community, of all generations, for whom the pool is part of their daily lives. They are special places, both emotionally and physically. As an artist I am drawn to the seaside architecture, the clean lines, modernist white walls and curves, and when seen from above, the contrast of this to the rocky sea bed. There is a tense element of man versus nature in some of the constructions; are the walls strong enough to hold off the power of the sea?
Not always, and it is common in some pools to have surf crashing over. Whether they are sea swimmers or pool swimmers, there is a strong and almost addictive bond to being in and around the water. That’s what brought me down to Cornwall nearly 25 years ago and I still feel the need to be in or around the sea daily.”
Sharon Griffin is a figurative artist who specialises in ceramic sculpture directly inspired by the landscape and the woodland in particular, where she often explores places to ‘breathe’.
Sharon is a Selected Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors (MRSS) and a Selected Member of the Craft Potters Association (CPA). She has a degree and an MA in Ceramics from the University of Wolverhampton 1997 and 2003 and has exhibited extensively including Ceramic Art London.
Using clay as her sculptural medium, preliminary sketches and drawings from life inform the work, helping ideas evolve and come to life. Once in the workshop, when the clay is being worked with directly, the sculpture is allowed to reveal itself: a conversation with clay.
Oxides, slips and glazes are worked into the surface of the clay, creating textured, multi-layered works of art which evoke character and energy. Her in depth understanding of the material merges traditional sculpting techniques with a contemporary approach to create sculptures full of movement, gesture, meaning and which capture the essence of humankind.
