“I use a mixed media approach to ceramic materials to make hand built pieces that can be appreciated as sculptural paintings.
A recurring and principal foundation in my work that remains as strong as ever, is the need to express something about my immediate surroundings and the landscape that I live in. I want my work to evoke a feeling of place and landscape without being over representational.

I live and work in Cornwall and the diverse natural and human made landscape that tell stories of the passing of geological time and human history is all around me and inevitably feeds the development and direction of my work.”

Craig Underhill’s ceramic vessels can best be described as sculptural paintings that are made with an experimental approach to using ceramic materials. By applying materials in bold and experimental ways, he creates a diverse range of surface finishes that are designed to work in conjunction with the slab built forms. Applying layers of materials that build a richness to the surface, areas with an intensity of mark making give a point of focus that contrast with plainer, more open and quieter areas.

Born in Glasgow, he learnt to throw at Derbyshire College, going on to study further at Harrow College and Portsmouth Polytechnic, quickly becoming aware that hand building and more specifically slab building allowed him the creative freedom he wanted. After a number of years spent teaching and exhibiting in the Midlands, he moved to Cornwall in 2025.

He is a Professional Member of the Craft Potters Association and has exhibited at Ceramic Art London and the Royal College of Art.
