“I am a sculptor, letter carver and printmaker. Inspired by nature, language, and landscape, I work in stone, clay, bronze, and paper. Words are at the start of every piece, reflecting place, belonging, and time’s passage – embracing the subtle changes and traces we leave behind.

My practice merges traditional carving with contemporary expression. Collaborations with artists, writers and communities extends my work into landscapes, galleries, and media such as radio and film. From jewellery to monumental stone pieces, my art balances craft and concept.”

Jo Sweeting was born in 1965. She studied Fine Art Sculpture at Leeds School of Art, and learned letter carving at Skelton Workshops.

Her work explores themes of transformation, memory and the human experience. Drawing inspiration from both natural and abstract forms, Sweeting works predominantly with stone, incorporating clay, bronze and paper.

Jo has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and her work is in collections around the world including Lettering Arts National Collection, American Express Stadium, Kensington Gardens, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Quaker Peace Garden, Seaford.

Her work has appeared in numerous publications and her new book – Long Ground, A Carver’s Notes – will be published by Nomad Press in 2026. The memoir is illustrated with her own original woodcuts.
