“I hope to capture a sense of wonder and peace by portraying joyous moments witnessed in nature that seem like little gifts from another place.

Signs that help us with the way forward, comforting us as we journey through this mad and busy life.

My focus is to capture an energy of movement through the poses of my birds, corresponding with an element of stillness in the intricate sculpted and cast scenes.

To enhance their theatricality and ethereal nature, so I can preserve them in time and keep them forever. Making the impermanent permanent. Sculpting in clay and casting everything in stone resin lends itself to this idea, reflecting my thoughts in the materiality of the work.”

Charlotte Austen is a sculptor, artist, designer and maker.

Charlotte was raised in a household surrounded by art and making. Her passion for the arts and theatre was influenced by her late mother who was her art and drama teacher at school and from a young age she was convinced her future needed to merge these two worlds.

After graduating from Central Saint Martins with a degree in fine art sculpture, Charlotte pursued a career in the London Theatre scene working in the West End and Shakespeare’s Globe, making bespoke props and costumes for many productions. She subsequently became an Art Director, creating installations for theatre, tv, film, window displays, world renowned film premieres, awards shows and many other high profile events for clients including Dior, Smythsons, Selfridges, Netflix, ITV, Channel 4, Burberry, Google, Virgin, Bafta and Selfridges.

Since moving to Somerset, Charlotte has pursued her love of sculpture and is passionate about exploring our relationship to nature, specifically the reassurance that being in nature gives us, those small moments and impermanent fleeting encounters that take our breath away.

Charlotte works in her Somerset studio, sculpting in clay and casting in stone resin through a series of multi piece molds.
