«I come from a long line of women painters where painting was as commonplace as eating or listening to the radio. An everyday thing.  As a child my family lived and worked in many different countries. With every new place we went, my mother made a sense of belonging and beauty with the things she took with her. Particularly with the way the meal table was laid. Different coloured tablemats, plates and napkins always there to welcome us. Perhaps this is where my love of still life comes from.»

Alice Mumford was born in Bogota, Colombia and then her family moved to Norway. She went to Dartington Hall School in Devon in her teens, then to Southwark College of Art and Design, followed by Camberwell School of Art in 1983, completing her studies at Falmouth School of Art in 1995. She moved to Cornwall where her mother’s family roots were and has been exhibiting her paintings for over thirty years, with many sell-out solo shows. She has been teaching at the St Ives School of Painting for twenty-five years, and has made a series of short films for YouTube about ideas in painting. She was elected an Academician at the RWA in 2010.
