Shirley Foote - Somewhere Else

Shirley Foote studied at The West of England College of Art and worked in ceramics in the 1970's, exhibiting widely until the early 90s, when she began painting full time. Her works can be found in private and public collections worldwide.

"From an early age I have always drawn and been visually aware of shapes, lines, cracks in cement, pavements and spaces in the landscape. I think these images are stored subliminally and now effect my work. Despite coming from a background in ceramics, I have always painted 'in my head'. I have no preconceived idea what my paintings will be. I just paint - it happens.

“The comedian Billy Connolly brilliantly summed it up when he said in an interview: "I'm supposed to be a comedian but I rarely get funny ideas for the stage. They come when I'm there. I could go for months and not get a single idea. So my life is very frightening because I don't know the code, you see. I don't know the PIN number. It never lets me down. I'm sure painters are like that. They get themselves into where it happens and get on with it. Well I hope I'm not on my own."

“Me too."
