JIM MOIR – AKA VIC REEVES – COGNO YONDER
18 JULY – 15 AUGUST 2026
“The Warhol of bird painting” – The Guardian
I am delighted to welcome the artist Jim Moir, otherwise known as the comedian, actor and author Vic Reeves, back for his third solo exhibition at Cornwall Contemporary. This follows on from his first solo show with us in 2022 The Lord of the Radiant Garden and his second show in 2023 Comestibles Sir? Both exhibitions were enormous successes with critics and collectors alike, with works sent around the UK and as far as Hong Kong and the USA.
Famous for his irreverent wit, glorious eccentricity and tremendous creativity, Jim Moir attended the Sir John Cass Art School in London at the age of 22 before becoming a household name in British comedy for television work including Vic Reeves Big Night Out, Shooting Stars, Vic Reeves Turner Prize Moments, The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, Coronation Street and House of Fools. His widely celebrated Sky Arts tv programme Painting Birds with Jim and Nancy which follows Jim and his wife Nancy Sorrell as they travel, paint birds and engage with wildlife is now on it’s third series.
Art has always been Moir’s first love and his original, eccentric and often mischievous artwork has been exhibited at institutions including the Royal Academy in London, where his Bug Colour Wheel print is currently being exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2026. I am delighted that we have the original painting from which the Royal Academy print was taken in this exhibition at Cornwall Contemporary and this painting features 149 original paintings of insects.
Since Moir’s last exhibition with us, his career has continued to flourish. In addition to exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Arts for a sixth time, he was the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Liverpool. Following the success of his hardback book Birds, published in 2022, a second volume, More Birds, was released in 2024. Both books are available to purchase at Cornwall Contemporary. Moir also created all of the illustrations for Charlie Higson’s ‘Willie, Willie, Harry, Stee: An Epically Short History of Our Kings & Queens’ book, and we are delighted to include a selection of those original paintings in this exhibition.
I hope you will have the opportunity to visit Cornwall Contemporary whilst this exhibition by Jim Moir is on display. This collection of recent paintings demonstrate his extraordinary attention to detail and celebrate his lifelong passion for birds and the natural world. They are also infused with Moir’s unmistakable wit and humour and offer a delightful nod to his career in comedy for which he is so well loved.
For any of you not able to come and view them in person, we will have an immersive 3d virtual reality tour of the show on our website where you will also find more information about Jim Moir and the inspiration behind his remarkable work.
We look forward to sharing these wonderful works with you all.
Sarah Brittain-Mansbridge MBE
Director, Cornwall Contemporary
