About the Gallery
“At the top of Chapel Street is Cornwall Contemporary, a dazzling white space opened in 2006 by Sarah Brittain-Mansbridge, its collections are a glorious showcase for Cornish artistic talent” The Independent
Now in its 15th year, there is an emphasis on exhibiting paintings and sculpture associated with Cornwall. Representing nationally and internationally known artists, the gallery has a reputation for showing exciting, quality, unique works of art.
Cornwall Contemporary opened on 1st September 2006. It is a large, spacious art gallery set out over three floors in a listed building at the top of historic Chapel Street in Penzance. The ground floor is used for changing exhibitions whilst the upper two floors are used for paintings by gallery artists and special capsule installations and exhibitions.
Exhibitions at Cornwall Contemporary change monthly and present the very best of art in Cornwall and from out of the county. Established and highly respected artists exhibit alongside some of the most exciting up–and–coming art school graduates and artists from around Britain and as far afield as Norway.
“It is truly a beautiful space, you’ll find all sorts of jewels from big names to new names. There’s something peaceful and tranquil about this gallery and I loved my time here. The Gallery Director, Sarah Brittain-Mansbridge clearly knows her stuff. She really is your expert on hand.” My Beautiful Cornwall
Gallery Director, Sarah Brittain-Mansbridge grew up in Cornwall and has been involved in the arts since graduating from Falmouth College of Art in 1996. With over 20 years of experience in working with artists, she is the author of the book ‘Behind the Canvas – 40 artists living and working in Penwith’ which was published in hardback and paperback in 2001 (Truran Books) and the artist biography ‘Daphne McClure – A Cornish Perspective’ published in paperback in 2020 (Sansom and Company). She is passionate about the artists she represents and aims to provide an excellent service both for them and for the clients who wish to acquire a unique work of art. With a wealth of experience in placing art in residential and business locations, she is happy to advise first time buyers, as well as those wishing to add to their collection.
In 2019 Sarah was selected as a trade ambassador by the Department for International Trade which has led to Cornwall Contemporary being featured in international trade catalogues for the creative industries and being represented at prestigious events such as exhibitions at the Chicago Consular General’s Residencies, where many of America’s foremost architects, designers and leaders in the creative industries are present. Sarah also regularly visits America on trade trips to broaden the gallery brand and forge links with galleries, artists and international buyers.
