sketchbook 1st - 22nd February 201 Sketchbooks are an integral part of most artists daily practice. Used for notations, jotting down compositions, colour combinations, sketching details of images seen on a walk, for preparatory images before paintings are undertaken, or even just doodling. Some artists use their sketchbooks as diaries, filling the pages with sketches made on holiday; snatched moments of the children asleep or the dog in front of the fire, portraits of friends, everyday minutia that informs and trickles through to their painting practice. Often the images that are found in a sketchbook are less ‘precious’, allowing the artist to draw and paint without the pressure of producing a “work of art” at the end of it. Some artists keep their sketchbook work private and sacred only for them to see whilst others often like what they produce in those pages so much that they regularly exhibit them alongside their canvases. Sketchbooks provide honest, unedited versions of creativity and I have always found them endlessly fascinating. When visiting a new artist in their studio, if I see a pile of sketchbooks in the corner, I know that I have found an artist who is genuine about their work.
