‘Invention’ is Nancy Pickard’s third solo exhibition at Cornwall Contemporary.

‘Be yourself, said Oscar Wilde, everyone else is taken’ and as the title of the exhibition suggests, Nancy’s work is nothing if not original and inventive.

Nancy Pickard was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1963. She was raised and educated in the Channel Islands and then at the Central School of Art, London and University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. She moved to West Cornwall in 2002 and has made this her home where she lives and works in a 200 year old converted Wesleyan Chapel.

An all-round artist who cannot be categorised - painter, artist, jewellery maker, sculptor, ceramicist - Nancy finds the history and landscape of the region a great inspiration.

The paintings and wall pieces are remarkable and bold, often with a narrative thread using poetry and philosophical writings. The quirky subject matter is infused with the cultural and natural history of the region as interpreted in a wide variety of media: paintings, ceramics, collages and metal work. Humour is often present in Nancy’s creations and this collection of works are very much her own ‘Invention’.

Nancy’s understanding of all kinds of art and her insight into working with a variety of media yields work that is both refreshing and original.
