“It took me about ten years to find my style with confidence, which was more or less how I’d been painting at the Royal College. I wasn’t directly influenced by Roger because he was an abstract artist but I was impressed by his very accurate use of colour. Using the subject as a vehicle for colour and form is really important to me. I start with a subject because I like a bit of reality in my pictures, and I make shapes relate to each other and colours bounce off each other. I love the fact that I can go to my studio and see the world as I see it through my pictures and it gives me pleasure, if some of the paintings have worked, just to look at them.”

Rose Hilton studied at Beckenham Art School before going on to the Royal College of Art where she won the Life Drawing and Painting Prize as well as the Abbey Minor Scholarship to Rome. On her return to London she began to exhibit with the Young Contemporaries. It was during this period that she met and married Roger Hilton. The following decade was spent supporting him through failing health and his flourishing career, whilst also raising their two sons. There was little time to pursue her own career as a painter during this time.

Rose’s reputation as one of the leading contemporary painters in Cornwall is now firmly established, with many solo exhibitions, publications and also a Tate St. Ives Retrospective in 2008.
