Nickie Carlyon

“The inspiration for many of my paintings comes from a group of photographs taken between 1920 – 1929. They record the early days of my great grandparents smallholding on Vancover Island, British Columbia and the childhood idyll that my mother and her brother enjoyed before they came to England in 1933. My Mum, Elspeth remembers these days so clearly and has described and talked about the extraordinary life they had there. The photos are black & white and show a wonderful family bond, brother & sister, mother, daughter, working horses and adored pets. The paintings are my imaginings of the colour, textures and atmosphere. They are the place which did exist in the past but now live in a memory; intangible but recognisable.”

Nickie Carlyon studied at Heatherleys School of Art, London followed by a BA Hons Fine Art Degree at West Surrey School of Art, Farnham, Surrey, 1990 – 1993.
She lives and works in Penwith, in the far South West of Cornwall and recent solo exhibitions include “My Family and Other Fish” at Cornwall Contemporary and “In My Mother’s Footsteps” at Exchange Gallery, both in 2017.
Nickie was recently shortlisted in the National Open Art Competition 2017.
